From prison to the workplace
Supporting someone into a job ready for when they leave prison is something that has become quite the norm for Seetec. Employment figures for the general prison population are quite damning. But Seetec’s employment coaching service is seeing more prisoners walk out the prison gate straight into a job following their release. Sarah’s story is no different.
When Sarah* first came to the workshop at Drake Hall Prison, she had low confidence. She believed it would be hard to find a job with a criminal record. And an employer would judge her when they found out about her past offending history. She also had concerns she lacked the skills employers wanted.
Seetec Justice’s employment coach Juliet worked with Sarah to discuss her job aspirations to work in a warehouse. After researching warehouse operative vacancies in Sarah’s home town, Juliet suggested Sarah apply for a forklift driving licence and study the Level 2 NVQ Award in Warehouse and Storage.
Through her NVQ and work in the Remade with Hope prison workshop, Sarah learnt essential skills such as quality control, problem-solving and stock rotation. She also gained valuable experience as a workshop team leader.
As a confidence boost, Sarah decided to apply for a part-time job at Gregg’s. She believed working with them would give her the determination to follow her chosen career path.
Together Juliet and Sarah composed a suitable supporting letter, CV, personal statement and disclosure letter. Sarah got the job.
Sarah said: “I have gained invaluable experience working for Seetec and Remade with Hope. I feel so lucky to have gained my forklift driving licence. My confidence has grown by being a team leader, and I am now ready to experience new ventures. The brilliant CV skills I learned will also help me in the future.”
