Training tailored for team leaders

Ten senior carers have qualified as team leaders, thanks to a bespoke training programme delivered by care staff specialist 1st Care Training in partnership with Seetec.

The employees at Doughty’s, a historic Almshouse which provides independent assisted living for 60 residents in Norwich, provide 24-hour support for the residents.

Managers identified the need for them to be offered team leadership training to support their demanding roles.

Karen Kiddell, Training Manager at Doughty’s, which is part of Norwich Consolidated Charities, explained: “1st Care Training listened and took on board exactly what we wanted and the outcomes and behaviours we needed to achieve.

“Our team leaders have really benefited from 1st Care Training and Seetec’s support to deliver flexible, bespoke training. They have learnt new skills around management and leadership, and now have a much better understanding of their role and requirements and the confidence to manage the frontline staff.”

Team Leader Penny Walpole from Norwich, who has worked at Doughty’s for 20 years, said: “I’ve learnt how to be more responsive to staff needs and how to lead the staff more effectively. It has made my roles and responsibilities, and what is expected of me and my staff, much clearer. It has definitely given me more confidence and helped me to promote best practice.”

Belinda White, Skills Delivery Manager for Seetec, said the training was supported through the European Social Fund, which aims to improve skills and pathways into and within work. She explained: “Seetec forms strong relationships with partners across the UK, in this case working with the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, allowing us to provide tailored skills training for individuals and organisations across a number of sectors.

“Working with 1st Care Training is a great example of how a local training provider with sector expertise could meet the skills needs of a care employer to help drive their organisation forward.”

Christine Bunting, Managing Director of First Care Training, said: “Seetec is very passionate about meeting the needs of different industries. Through our contract with them, we have been able to provide very bespoke team management and supervision training, benefiting an employer by upskilling their care staff.”
