Stepping to success: Bethany's story

Bethany's story

Bethany joined Seetec’s customer service traineeship in Romford in June 2017, looking to develop her skills and secure employment. She has now found a job she loves and is keen to share her success with other 16-24 year olds who would benefit from the same training and support.

Like others on the programme Bethany had reservations at the start as she’d been with other training providers in the past but not achieved the successful outcome she’d hoped for. She faced a range of practical challenges on a daily basis, but this made her no less determined to find a job she loved and could do well.

Bethany soon bonded with the other learners as they spent the first few weeks of the programme working toward their Level 1 Award in Progression and preparing for their work experience placement. All lacked confidence and motivation in the beginning - and none of them had any previous work experience - but with the help and support of their tutor, Debra Dixon, they began to look forward to the next big step they were about to take.

Seetec arranged for Bethany and three other learners to complete 100 hours of work experience at The Range, one of the UK’s fastest-growing home, garden and leisure retail chains. Debra offered practical support, like meeting them at the station and walking them to their work placement locations, listening to any concerns they had and encouraging them to achieve what she knew they were capable of.

Bethany started off working in the office, filing invoices and sorting paperwork, but soon moved to the sales floor when her manager saw that she was capable of undertaking a much wider variety of tasks. In addition to checking stock and prices she was given full responsibility for conducting trading standards checks on all departments.

At the end of the placement learners were invited to attend an interview at The Range, and Bethany was delighted when she received an offer of employment. She now works 12 hours a week - both in the office and on the sales floor - with a view to increasing her hours in the future. She said,

“I’m so excited to be working at last. I’ve made some great friends on the course and Debra has been a fantastic tutor and mentor. I now have a proper CV in place, work experience and a career to work towards.”

Bethany’s manager at The Range, Audrey Willis, is also delighted to have her on board. She told Seetec,

“It’s a real pleasure to have Bethany on our team. She’s fitted in so well, and works well on her own and with others. She has a bright future ahead of her.”

Bethany has come a long way on the traineeship programme, and her tutor Debra has enjoyed watching her blossom and develop new skills.  She said,

“It’s been a rewarding experience and I’m thrilled at how far Bethany has come. Like the other learners on the course her confidence has really grown, and I have no doubt she’ll continue to achieve anything she puts her mind to.”
