Kicking off a career in digital at Southend United

Callum, 18, recently landed his dream role when he was taken on as a digital marketing apprentice by Southend United Football Club.

Combining his love of football with a passion for digital, Callum is thoroughly enjoying the opportunity he’s been given to develop a digital marketing career while becoming an employee of the club he’s supported for years.

The Level 3 apprenticeship will take around 18 months to complete, and in this time Callum will be working towards a recognised qualification while gaining work experience related to his career goals.

Learning on the job

Since starting his digital marketing apprenticeship in the summer, Callum has been actively involved in promoting the activities of the club.

This has included school visits with Southend United Community & Educational Trust, creating video content to promote what the community trust and the club do in the local area and using video content to promote upcoming Blues matches. Callum has also been looking after the social media pages for the commercial department.

He explained, “I’ve already learnt so much in such a short space of time. There’s an art to creating content for websites and social media. It’s got to be varied and interesting. You have to make sure the language you use is both professional and engaging, and the visuals eye-catching. And then you have to make sure that content is shared online as widely as possible.

“I’ve had so much support from the commercial team at Southend United and my tutor at Seetec, and I’m already much more confident in my abilities. I’ve learned to use a wide variety of digital marketing tools and I get to be really creative and hands on. I find it’s much better to learn by doing.”

A valuable member of the team

Rhys Ellingham, Head of Commercial at Southend United, has described Callum as a great addition to the team who’s already made a valuable contribution to the club since joining in the summer.

“During interview stages we knew he was the perfect candidate for the role," Rhys said. "He was still at college but we were happy to wait until he’d completed his diploma in media production. He’s really helped the club to move forward and increase revenue with his website, social media and video input.”

A way into the digital marketing industry

So what does Callum have planned for the future? Working for a well-known professional football club will certainly enhance his CV, as will his apprenticeship qualification, and this is bound to open doors for him.

“This is a massive opportunity” he continued. “I definitely want to continue working within the sports and leisure industry, and can apply the skills I’m learning almost anywhere. There are so many opportunities in digital marketing, and this is a great place to start”.
