Helping people back into the workplace: Robert's story

Robert Gormally

“Learning disabilities affected our confidence… we never thought we would find jobs.”

Lisa and her partner, Robert, both needed additional help with their learning disabilities, which was severely knocking their confidence and holding them back from finding employment. The couple struggled with reading, writing, and maths, with their main issue being spelling. They also had no IT skills, which was massively hindering their job application process.

Lisa and Robert, along with many others in the Wigan area, turned to Seetec, for the additional support they needed to help them to return to work; developing new skills, understanding complicated information, and interacting with new people.

Seetec helped Robert, to find a cleaning role within a school, also with Cole Security Services Ltd. Robert said; “I had been unemployed for four years before I turned to Seetec for help, after working as a Warehouse Operative within the same company for twenty years. Seetec supported me through my Learn Direct IT course and throughout my two-week in-house Gateway programme, which left me at ease in group situations with new people.

“I learned so much from the interview and application form workshops, which after twenty years was completely new to me. My adviser Hayley helped me to believe that I could find another job, which meant I was able build back my confidence. I never thought that I would find another job, and didn’t know how to with my learning difficulties, but Andy and Hayley made this happen.”

Their adviser, Hayley Fisk, said: “Lisa and Robert have been an absolute pleasure to support. They are enthusiastic about working and completed every task set to the best of their ability. Showing them both that there is a job out there for everyone has been so rewarding, and watching their confidence grow has been lovely. I’m over the moon that they have found work again after four years, and I’m so happy to have helped them.”
