Forklift Training Course Helps Service User Find Work

Service User Journey to Success

Seetec Justice works in prisons across England, supporting prisoners to achieve their rehabilitation goals. Our programme of support provides prisoners with a dedicated Employment Coach and access to real employers inside prisons improving job entry chances on release.

Service User *Michael is serving a sentence of 2 years and 3 months after committing his first offence. Prior to his sentence, Michael worked in various warehousing roles and had experience in fitting windows.

With guidance from Juliet, Seetec’s Employment Coach, Michael is exploring his employment options and choices for when he is released. Juliet has also been working closely with Michael to provide additional support with understanding job specifications and descriptions and matching his skills to suitable job roles.

Based on the opportunities available for Michael, Juliet worked with him on some of the basic employability skills. This included creating a tailored CV to meet individual job specifications and cover letters to accompany his job applications. Michael attended many workshops that enabled him to pick up various skills including training new starts, assigning workload, quality control, problem solving and rotation.

However, Juliet could see that Michael needed more support and identified an opportunity for Michael to refresh his Folk Lift Truck Licence (FLT). Michael completed his FLT licence whilst in prison and now could apply for more skilled job opportunities. Juliet contacted his former employer and was able to inform them of the new skills he had acquired.

Juliet said:

“Michael was keen to gain employment on release and engaged well with me, he was keen to acquire new skills and always willing to work that bit extra to achieve these.”

Since refreshing his FLT licence, his former employer has now been in contact with Michael to offer him a position when he is released from prison.

Michael said:

“All of the workshop staff always goes the extra mile to help me and have been there to support me through my journey in the workshop. I am grateful for all their support and encouragement and really appreciate them funding my Fork Lift Truck Licence. It has made my time at Thorn Cross go much quicker and will help me to stay focused on release.”
