Castlebar Customers Benefit from New Migrant Programme
The first two customers to complete the Welcome to Work programme received their certificates of achievement at a graduation ceremony at their local Castlebar centre.
The 13 week programme, which is jointly funded by the Irish Government and the European Social Fund (ESF) as part of the Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014 -2020 is aimed at helping unemployed, legally resident migrants find sustainable employment.
Daiva and Muhammed are from vastly different backgrounds and clearly had very differing individual needs. Daiva is Lithuanian and had very limited English language skills. She relied on her daughter to interpret for her when she attended a Seetec centre. Muhammed is from Pakistan and had a more advanced standard of English and required more “job application” language tuition.
Seetec’s Welcome to Work Facilitator, Tracy is ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) qualified, and was able to assist both Daiva and Muhammed with English language sessions. After working with Daiva for a few weeks, she was able to attend sessions on her own.
Both customers were able to benefit from a range of employability interventions including; enhancing their IT Skills, participating in inter-active learning games and CV development sessions where they both finished with job ready CVs. Muhammed also attended group sessions covering topics such as interview techniques and personal marketing.
Part of the welcome to work programme is to understand Ireland’s culture and heritage and Daiva and Muhammed enjoyed a day’s field trip to one of the local museums where they learnt about past Irish country life. Tracy also assisted them with local services such as joining the library.
Now Daiva and Muhammed have completed the programme, they will receive on-going training and job search support for the next 12 months - Muhammed plans to enrol on a security training course which will be funded by the programme.
Both expressed their gratitude at the ceremony for the support they have received and recommended the programme to friends and family.
Seetec is currently enrolling for the next 13 week programme which is due to commence on Thursday 18th January 2018.
