Belfast Students Encouraged to Consider Apprenticeships over University

National Careers Fair Belfast

Thousands of school leavers in Belfast are being urged to seriously consider apprenticeships and their career prospects before the end of the academic year.

Aaron McNeil, apprenticeships team leader at Seetec, attended the West Belfast Careers Convention Conference on Thursday 31 January and was encouraged by the students’ comments. He said “the focus of the event was for students to investigate a wide range of career areas, discuss opportunities, entrance qualifications and to identify what training is currently available with employers.

He continued, "from the conversations I had with those who attended, there’s a clear desire among the students to get into the working environment and begin their career journey. This is excellent news for Belfast employers, as we have a new wave of bright young minds ready to enter the market.”

Julie Gorman, Operations Manager at Seetec, spoke after the conference that saw 1,100 pupils attend St Rose's Dominican College and said "there’s no better time than now to choose an apprenticeship as a growing number of sectors offer placements for those who wish to ‘earn as they learn’.

Julie added, "long gone are the days of apprenticeships being dominated by just the construction and manufacturing industries. The opportunities to flourish in more varied professions is as healthy as it has ever been, and the options available make apprenticeships as – if not more – attractive than university studies. Apprenticeships offer people a foot in the door with an employer, hands on experience and the added bonus of ‘earning while you’re learning’. With many young people concerned about the financial impact university studies have, an apprenticeship can offer more surety for those forging a new career pathway.”

At Seetec, we work with employers across Belfast to recruit the best talent for their organisation as part of the government-backed ApprenticeshipsNI programme.

We offer a variety of different apprenticeship pathways, including:

• Social Media and Digital Marketing Level 3

• Aviation Operations on the Ground Level 2 & 3

• Traffic Officer Level 2 & 3

• Warehousing and Storage Level 2

• Logistics Operations Level 3

• Driving Goods Vehicles Level 2 & 3

• Supply Chain Management Level 2 & 3
