35 Years of Evolution Keeps Seetec Ahead of the Game

Marking our recent 35th anniversary, former apprentice and Group MD John Baumback reflects on Seetec’s journey since its founding in 1984.

Agility has always been the key to our success, working in the fast-ever-changing world of employment and skills. Nowhere is this more evident than in our own journey as a business.

Starting when the digital revolution was in its infancy, Seetec begun as a training provider for computer and software engineering. However, it wasn’t long before we began to evolve, tapping into new markets like GP practices and healthcare providers.

Group Managing Director John Baumback also embodies our evolution, having started at Seetec as an apprentice and progressing through to trainer, software developer and IT Director. John assumed the position of Managing Director when we won the contract to run community rehabilitation services in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. This fleetness of foot, from Group MD throughout the senior team, is what keeps us ahead of the game.

Since then we have experienced seismic growth and evolved to further diversify our offering. From a pioneer IT specialist to a major provider of employment services through the government Work programme, increasing turnover tenfold.

However, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. With staff numbers rising to 2,400, the hardest part for John has come when changes to government contracts has meant making staff redundant.

John said, “I’ve grown up with the business and there have been some massive challenges, making changes we didn’t want to make,” he said.

“It’s been vital to practice what we preach and place our people at the heart of our business, supporting and investing in them to take responsibility for their own lifelong learning.”

This commitment to its people saw Seetec achieving the Gold Investors in People Award in 2016 and 2018, as well as the IiP’s Health and Wellbeing award.

Our staff have had to adapt to significant changes of gear. It’s very easy to talk about embracing change, but experiencing it is very different.”

But our evolution doesn’t stop here. The Seetec Group is positioning to thrive for the next 35 years, continuing to seize new opportunities and evolve. John concludes: “Our people are our greatest asset. We’ve got people in the business with that flexibility and ability to adapt to what is needed.”
