Front-end Web Development Apprentice
Head of Digital Development
The overall goal for the end of the apprenticeship is to complete and gain my diploma and gain a varied skillset in my desired role. Besides this, I would also like to come out of this apprenticeship with a better idea of the working world, understanding the workplace as well as shaping myself into a more approachable and grounded person with developed social and team working skills.
Through in-house training with different web developers, our aim is to help Todd nurture a career in web development by learning the fundamentals and relevant programming languages for Front-End development. By the end of the scheme Todd will become a competent programmer, learning a variety of different aspects of web development by building responsive websites, web applications, HTML emails and email signatures.
After being briefed on a new project, which involved the development of a site for a photography client, I quickly realised that I would need to use the skills that I'd learnt over the past couple of months. Some of these skills included implementing the site's headers and adding in the basic styling, images and navigation options.
This week I introduced Todd to his first major independent project. Over the next few weeks he will be using all of the skills he has learnt so far, including HTML Structure, component building and responsive design, working as the sole developer for a photography website project.
This week also involved an I.T exam as part of my Seetec apprenticeship. A representative from Seetec came to work and I took the test on his laptop. The test lasted around an hour and a half and tested all of my general IT skills.
Working on the new site has also allowed me to develop my understanding of breakpoints which set the dimensions for various screen displays. Working on the mobile breakpoints which included the mobile images, gave me great experience and this process also involved optimising the site for other displays, including the images, text and layouts.
Todd communicates well with all members of the team and will ask questions to help gain knowledgeable information from the people around him. He has the initiative to query aspects of designed elements with our web designers and developers to enhance the website build and ensure the best methods have been applied
So far I am very pleased with my progress and also impressed at how much I've learned. I'm getting helpful feedback on all of my work which allows me to improve daily.
We are really pleased that Todd has become a fully integrated and valued member of the development team. During the months Todd has spent here at Storm, he has developed a strong grasp of many development functions and can already be relied upon to carry out a number of tasks independently.
