Settling Down To Work
James had been unemployed since 2005 and joined the New Deal
Tailored Pathway programme with Chelmsford from June 2007. James
found that his main barrier was a sporadic work history due to
various temporary jobs and his in-ability to gain long term
employment. His Employment Consultant, Trudy, decided that he
should be referred for a work placement to boost his confidence and
to gain some work experience.
After a discussion with James, Leigh, his Placement
Co-Ordinator identified that a national supermarket chain had a
store on his bus route and had opportunities in the warehouse.
An interview with the Warehouse Manager was organised and James
started his placement in July. In order to enhance his employment
prospects Leigh discussed with Trudy the possibility of him
securing a forklift licence. It was decided that if he delivered a
positive performance at his four week review then he would be put
forward for forklift training. His placement review noted good
motivation, communication and personal presentation skills coupled
with the ability to work using his own initiative and as an
integral team member. Therefore, Trudy organised training for his
Counterbalance Forklift licence which he successfully passed.
James's placement finished on 23rd September and the
supermarket didn't hesitate in offering him a permanent job
starting from the 25th September! Well done James.
