Permitted Work
In today's performance driven business environment it is
critical to have the right number and calibre of staff at all times
to ensure the organisation's effectiveness and long term
survival.
Unfortunately, staff leave voluntarily, retire, are absent
through ill health, take maternity / paternity leave or the
organisation unexpectedly wins new contracts or boosts sales and
suddenly requires new staff. In the past, companies could place
inexpensive advertisements in newspapers and instantly access the
ample, traditional labour pool being virtually certain of finding
appropriate candidates.
But times seem to be changing; experience and the media
suggest that the traditional labour pool is shrinking, that
appropriately qualified candidates are becoming scarce and that the
unit cost of advertising is increasing, all of which is
increasingly putting the viability of organisations at risk.
However, there is an alternative labour pool of approximately
1 million well skilled people wanting to return to work having
claimed Incapacity Benefit. Many, are nervous and unsure of taking
on a full time job and therefore seek part time or temporary work
to build their confidence and stamina before returning to full time
work. To achieve this they seek Permitted Work.
Permitted Work
Permitted Work is purely a benefit arrangement allowing those
on Incapacity Benefit to continue to claim their benefit whilst
receiving earnings according to well defined rules. Employers do
not actually have to offer Permitted Work, all they need to have is
available part time / temporary work.
Current rules allow claimants to either earn £20.00 a
week for an unlimited period or to work less than 16 hours a week,
on average, with earnings up to and including £78.00 a week
for a period of up to 26 weeks (this can be extended up to a
maximum of another 26 weeks subject to agreement). Hourly rates
must at least be the prevailing National Minimum Wage.
