New Deal for Musicians
New Deal for Musicians is an additional programme intended to
help participants who are eligible for New Deal 25+ or New Deal for
Young People gain employment within the music industry.
Participants tend to be active musicians and may have experience or
qualifications. The programme recognises the broad diversity
of music and caters for all types of music and professions ranging
from dance to classical music and composers through to DJs.
Participants must proceed through the relevant New Deal
programmes and enter the New Deal for Musicians either at Stage 1 -
The Gateway or for New Deal 25+ participants at Stage 2 Intensive
Activity Period.
The programme consists of three
elements:
- A Music Industry Consultant (MIC)
- Music Open Learning (MOL)
- Subsidised/Self Employment
Music Industry Consultant (MIC)
A MIC has extensive knowledge and experience of the music
industry and is there to offer guidance, counselling and
advice. The participant can have access to the MIC at any
point on the New Deal programme and there is no set length of time
that help can be offered. The MIC' s role is purely support
and guidance.
Music Open Learning (MOL)
Depending on the participants New Deal programme, MOL can last
for up to 26 weeks for those aged 18-24 or 60 hours for those over
25 and consists of modular open learning materials ranging from
building a career within the industry though to composing and song
writing. These modules help the participant to decide on a
chosen career path and increase the participant's
employability.
Subsidised/Self Employment Option
This element provides the participant with the option of
either having a period of subsidised employment or becoming
self-employed and being able to test trade for a period up to 26
weeks. Whilst on the self-employment route the participant
can continue receiving benefits and will receive a grant towards
moving into unsupported employment. Participants will also
continue receiving support and guidance from the MIC and will have
access to further development through MOLP.
Follow-Through
If the participant fails to gain employment
within the music industry or to become self- employed, the
participant starts a Follow-Through period, which can last up to 13
weeks. During this time the participant receives intensive help
with jobsearch and is provided with tailored advice and
guidance.
