When Jannette Hilton, aged 46 from Martham,
near Great Yarmouth suddenly found herself out of work, she thought
she wouldn’t be able to find suitable work again locally. Having
worked for a local family business for many years Janette was
devastated when the factory closed down. Jannette was concerned
that she wouldn’t have the skills that employers would be looking
for in today’s economy.
Having been referred to Seetec in Great
Yarmouth by Jobcentre plus, Janette was introduced to Paul Cook,
one of Seetec’s employment consultants.
Janette joined the Opportunities East of
England programme which is designed to help and short and long term
unemployed back into sustainable employment.
“I was very nervous when I first arrived at
Seetec” said Janette. “I didn’t think that my work experience for
the family business and being a carer for elderly relatives would
help me find a new job. I met with Paul and he told me to write
everything down on my CV, not just my work experience but also my
interests and hobbies. I couldn’t believe it when my CV was
initially 8 pages long! Paul helped me to shorten this down.”
Paul knew that he had to try to improve
Jannette’s confidence.
“When you find yourself suddenly unemployed it
is very easy with the current economic climate to give up and not
to believe that you will find work. Having met Jannette she did
lack confidence in her own ability but I knew that her varied work
background gave her a broad skill set that employers would embrace.
Once we had re-written Jannette's CV we started to approach the
care industry for vacant positions as this was an area Jannette had
gained previous experience and a profession that she enjoyed” says
Paul.
Seetec run a number of confidence building
workshops and interview technique sessions to help job seekers
increase there chances of finding employment. The workshops not
only provide job seekers with guidance and confidence, it also give
them the chance to share experiences with other people attending
the workshop who may be in a similar situation to themselves.
“I went to the first interview and was so
excited when they offered me a position there and then” said
Janette, but her excitement was short lived when she found out she
would need a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check, a standard
requirement for those wishing to work with young or vulnerable
people, before she could start. “I just didn’t have the money” said
Jannette “I came to see Paul to tell him the news and he told me
that Seetec would pay for the CRB check. I just couldn’t believe
it!”
All checks where made and Jannette started her
new job just 8 weeks after first coming into the Seetec Great
Yarmouth office.
“I love my job and the people I work with are
great. I love doing arts and crafts and because of Paul’s advice,
adding this to my CV not only am I working as a carer in the
evening but I now also run craft workshops at the home 5 days a
week.
