Routes to Success

Job Hunting Tools

You need a job but where do you go to find one?  Listed below are some of the options available to you.

Jobcentre Plus

Jobcentre Plus has thousands of vacancies on their national database.  These can be accessed in the Jobcentres either on boards or electronic terminals or via their website. http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/ - (link opens in new window)

Newspapers

Most national and local newspapers have a classified job section.  Make sure you know what day the job section is published and make sure you take note of any closing dates on the adverts.

Trade Publications

Most professional or specialist roles have a trade association or journal e.g. Personnel Today, Marketing Week etc. Most of these publications have a recruitment section at the back.

Online

There is now a large selection of ‘internet jobsites’ many of which advertise jobs and allow you to upload your CV.  A selection of the most popular include:

Most companies also have a ‘careers’ or ‘vacancies’ section on their website.  Make a list of companies in your town and visit their websites to see if they are recruiting.

Recruitment Agencies

Most recruitment agencies have temporary and permanent vacancies.  Recruitment agencies work by charging employer for their services so you should not expect to pay to register with one.

Word of Mouth / Networking

It is estimated that 70% of jobs are never actually advertised but are filled through word of mouth.  Get chatting to friends, family and neighbours and find out if their company is recruiting or if they know of any vacancies.

Be proactive

Another way of accessing these ‘hidden vacancies’ is to market yourself.  Put together a good covering letter and CV and either deliver them or send them to companies speculatively.  It may be that they are just about to advertise a vacancy that you would be perfect for.

Job Fairs

These events are often organised by Jobcentre Plus or local authorities and are attended by a range of local employers.  Go prepared, dress smartly, take along copies of your CV and be prepared to talk to employers face to face.

Self Employment

If you are struggling to find a job that is right for you, you may wish to consider starting your own business.  There are a range of organisations including Business Link that can provide advice and guidance on what you need to do.
