Chaucer Freight is an international freight
forwarding company based in Rainham, Essex. With an annual
turnover of £8.5 million, they provide a wide range of shipping and
forwarding services in all industry sectors and employ 20
staff.
Mandy Bennett, owner of Chaucer
Freight understands the importance of investing in staff training,
as she herself was a trainer for 10 years at a large corporate
organisation.
Since establishing her own company in January
2006, she found recruitment to be a problem. Experienced and
qualified candidates were outstanding on paper, but in practice
they didn’t fit the job. Knowing that school leavers often do
not consider logistics as a career, she embarked on recruiting
young people with no industry skills and experience, in order to
train them on her own bespoke trainee programme.
Mandy designed and implemented a modular
trainee programme which allows new staff to gain all round
experience of freight forwarding. Consisting of 2 weeks
individual learning in each of her company’s departments; Sea, Air
UK, Domestic, Warehousing, Sales and Accounts. With Seetec’s
support staff can gain an NVQ qualification in their chosen
occupational area.
So far, the programme has been a great success
with Mark gaining a NVQ in Warehousing and Logistics and Terri
studying towards an NVQ in Business Administration.
Mandy said “I am really proud that Mark and
Terri have studied for their NVQ’s. The courses have given
them a real confidence boost and it has underlined their knowledge
and abilities. The NVQ’s have made them both realise that
they are very capable, and actually know more about their job roles
than they initially
thought”.
